Deepened their understanding of emotions

Ambi Pu

In this semester's Dance 385 course, I have learned many concepts, techniques, knowledge, teaching methodologies, and skills that will be crucial for my career in education. The course has cultivated my ability to rationally apply, integrate, and transform this knowledge. The most important aspect I've gained from this class is the understanding of how dance, as a distinct art form, positively contributes to the diverse and comprehensive education and guidance of children. Dance plays a multifaceted role in the education of children, exerting profound influences on their physical, psychological, and social development.

Firstly, through dance, children can develop coordination, flexibility, and endurance, fostering the healthy growth of their bodies. This contributes to maintaining a healthy lifestyle and cultivating a strong awareness of their bodies. Secondly, dance provides children with a platform to express their emotions and creative ideas. By learning different dance movements and forms, they can cultivate a unique artistic perception and enhance their sensitivity to beauty. This also helps shape their ability to express themselves confidently in relation to their emotions. On the social front, dance education emphasizes teamwork and collective collaboration. Through ensemble performances and choreography, children learn to coordinate with others, collectively pursuing shared goals. This contributes to the development of their social skills, including communication, listening, and interaction, laying a foundation for future teamwork.

Finally, dance education can guide children to explore cultures and traditions from around the world. By studying the origins and development of different dance styles, they can broaden their cultural perspectives, fostering an understanding and respect for diverse cultures. In summary, dance, as a comprehensive educational tool, provides children with opportunities for all-rounded development in physical, emotional, and social aspects, laying a solid foundation for their future.

In this semester's course, I thoroughly enjoyed learning the theoretical knowledge and skills involved in creating dance curricula and teaching children to dance. What excited me even more was the hands-on experience we gained through various group activities, immersing ourselves in the practical effects of different creative teaching methods. For instance, during a group creative task, we simulated a dance class filled with imagination and interactivity, allowing me to experience how students thrive with energy and engagement in such an atmosphere. This semester's course provided a multidimensional learning experience through these group activities, not only imparting theoretical knowledge but also allowing me to learn more through hands-on practices. Each group employed unique teaching approaches, emphasizing narrative choreography, interactive experiences, or cultural integration. This realization highlighted that teaching is not static but can be innovated based on different contexts and student needs.

During the final presentations, I witnessed the astonishing diversity showcased by classmates from various cultural backgrounds and dance styles. Their presentations were not just skillful applications of acquired knowledge but vibrant interpretations of creative teaching. Through this series of activities, I learned not only how to apply theory into practice but also deeply appreciated the charm of creative teaching. This semester's course will undoubtedly be a memorable and enriching learning journey throughout my life.

In this semester's course, I have discovered that dance is not only an independent form of art but also a powerful educational tool. Through meticulous lesson planning, I have learned how to integrate dance into various subjects, providing a more comprehensive and creative learning experience. For instance, in the history class, I designed a project requiring students to choreograph a dance to reenact historical events. This activity not only taught students about historical events but also allowed them to feel the atmosphere through physical participation, making the knowledge more deeply ingrained.

In the geography class, I developed a dance project where students showcased cultural features of different regions through dance. This not only enhanced their understanding of geographical concepts but also enriched their cultural awareness. In the sociology class, I introduced dance to simulate social structures and interpersonal relationships. Through role-playing in dance, students gained a better understanding of sociological theories and experienced the complexity of social interactions. In the literature class, I collaborated with students to create a dance performance based on literary works. This process not only deepened their understanding of emotions and themes in literature but also nurtured creative thinking and teamwork.

These detailed and engaging teaching methods not only enriched the classroom experience but also sparked students' interest in learning. By integrating dance into various subjects, I found that students were more likely to comprehend abstract concepts while developing their teamwork and expressive skills. This comprehensive teaching approach not only elevated the mastery of subject knowledge but also provided students with a more enriching and well-rounded learning experience.

To curate a curriculum that caters to the needs of all their students.

Chisom Alumba

At the beginning of the semester, I was so overwhelmed by the amount of work I would have to do, while reading the syllabus, especially because I had never taken a university dance course before, and I had joined the class a bit late. On the first day I attended this class, I was a bit shy but immediately felt welcome. Everyone seemed so nice and after speaking to Professor Jorge at the end of class, I was relaxed and knew that everything was going to be okay. I was not sure what to expect from the class, but I had a good feeling about the course. Throughout the course, I formed good relationships with the other class members because of the group discussions. I really liked my group, and it was nice to see how different but seamless our opinions and ideas were, while talking about the different lessons we had during the semester. I also did not feel pressured by the amount of work that needed to be done or the amount of material that we had to learn. Professor Jorge taught the lessons in an amazing way, and it did not feel like we were forced to learn the material just to pass the class. We learned the material because we were interested in it and Professor Jorge also understood that everyone had different circumstances aside from academics, so it was okay if we were not able to make class. But, we were still responsible for making up the lectures in the discussion board; he was gracious but fair.

From this class, I learned that dancers learn information differently from non-dancers and this was something I could relate to. To assimilate information better, dancers must do movements or activities instead of sitting in a regular classroom. This is because dancers are conditioned to move regularly because we perform often, and it was interesting to learn about the activities that we could do in class. I also learned that there are multiple ways of teaching material to students; there is not just a one-size-fits-all curriculum that works for all students, and it is the responsibility of a teacher to curate a curriculum that caters to the needs of all their students. Also, if the students do not understand the material or are not performing well in the assessments, it is the responsibility of the teacher to review their curriculum or method of assessment so that the students can understand the material better and everyone can be carried along.

Another thing I have learnt from this course is patience. It was nice to observe the art curators at the Lowe Art Museum and how they patiently waited for us to process our thoughts and opinions on the artworks before sharing. Having the opportunity to perform the role of the curator also gave us the experience of waiting patiently on students, as well as experiencing the process of being waited on without pressure and taking the time to formulate our thoughts into words. This showed me that when a teacher is patient with their students and gives them the chance to properly formulate their opinions, it encourages the students to speak up in class more instead of being forced to speak or being called called. Through this, as well as watching and participating in everyone’s lesson plans each week, I have learned that everyone is creative, and people portray their creativity in multiple ways. It was nice to see how confident people were in showcasing their creativity and I also learned how to open up and be confident in highlighting my own creativity.

As someone whose aspiration is to attend medical school after graduation and become a medical doctor thereafter, I believe that I can incorporate the lessons I have learnt in this course into my studies and in my future profession. I can incorporate the act of patience and proper communication. While working and studying, I will be interacting with strangers often and while interacting with strangers, I will endeavor to be patient and give people the time to process their thoughts and emotions while communicating, so that they feel less overwhelmed, especially since they would be talking to a stranger. I will also engage in activities while learning information to assimilate it better rather than trying hard to fit into the realm of just reading and writing to understand information. Lastly, I will appreciate people’s opinions and creativity when interacting with people or participating in group projects. I will encourage people to speak about their opinions so I can learn more from them and even form relationships with them.

Building connection and report

Isabella Collado Hernández

DAN 385 has been such a meaningful class for me. From the very first day, Jorge established

report with his students and I learned from the very first minutes ever having been in his

classroom the crucial importance of getting to know your students, fostering a safe and inclusive

space, and eliminating traditional power dynamics. I liked the structure of the class and how we

were first introduced with ancient methods of teaching and worked our way forward through

history to arrive to present day teaching methods. We learned about different methods of diverse

teaching and how to differentiate for students with specific needs. Concluding the class with each student becoming the teacher was very magical and inspiring. Everyone taught a class that

reflected who they were as a person in some way, and we were all able to shine individually and

in our own ways.

Learning in class felt very safe. I didn’t feel the pressures that come with expected testing, and

surprisingly was able to learn more after the grading aspect for test taking was removed. I was

also given the opportunity to be myself in class and this helped a lot with my confidence in

trying new things during my peers’ lesson’s. Being in Jorge’s class was an escape during my day

especially when stress was high, and my patience was depleting. Dance is something I didn’t

think I would ever have in my life again and this class opened my mind back up to the

possibilities of my progression in dance in the future.

I really have no idea what I will do with my degree and the field of study it is in, but I do think I

will utilize a lot of the skills learned in our class wherever I end up. The part that will always

stick with me is the importance of learning people’s names and it is something I have really

struggled with in the past. This class proved its importance in building connection and report

and how valuable that is in a shared space like a classroom, work environment, or group activity.

Overall I will never forget this class or Jorge’s kindness to me through it. Hearing Jorge’s

educational and life journey has inspired me and will continue to inspire me long after my days

at UM are over and I cannot be more thankful and grateful for that.

Creating a holistic environment

Alexandria Cinquemani

Teaching the future of our society is one of the most important jobs we have as adults. Being academically advanced is just as necessary as being a well-rounded individual. In our Methods of Teaching Dance class, we learned many skills to teach kids to dance and make them well-rounded. One of the most important things we learned is to create a holistic learning environment. Being scared in a classroom will have a child learn nothing. Creating an open, accepting, and fun class for kids will have them performing at their highest level. Letting children be creative is also a valuable addition to the classroom. When children are being creative they can use different ways of thinking. This not only helps them to be more comfortable in a classroom but it also creates a more advanced thinking strategy in all aspects of life.

Confining children in a box, and only having them learn what a teacher is telling them can harm their development. We also learned a lot about classroom planning. Procedures must be implemented to ensure a safe and well-functioning classroom. The children should have and know routines when they walk into the room so that chaos doesn't break out. If for some reason unwanted behavior does happen in the classroom, consequences and routines should also be planned. The most important part of a classroom is for both the students and the teacher to trust each other and feel comfortable. When there is a good environment in the classroom the lesson plans can be executed more smoothly.

This course was informative and taught me a lot about children's education.  It was super exciting seeing everyone else teach at the end of the semester. It was nice that we were able to put our knowledge to use. Teaching my own class was my favorite thing we did this semester. I have taught dance before to ages 2-13, and being able to teach a class to my peers was really fun. I felt comfortable and confident in the class which is how we were taught students should feel in a classroom. Coming together at the end of each class was a nice way to end, it helped the class to connect more and got us more familiar with each other. I think this was a great class and I wish I was able to take it a second time. Methods of Teaching Dance is a class I would recommend to others, it is a great environment to be in and I learned so many life skills for teaching and being around children.

I am an exercise physiology major with the goal of owning my own dance therapy  studio. Methods of Teaching Dance is a class that will very much relate to my field. I think that the tools we learned in this class can not only apply to children but also to adults. We learned to make children feel comfortable and safe in the classroom to be able to learn. I think that adults also perform better when they are in a comfortable environment. I have learned in some of my kinesiology classes that when you are put under more stress it takes your body longer to heal from injuries, sickness, and disease.

Creating a holistic environment like we learned in Methods of Teaching Dance can reduce that pressure and create a better healing environment. I am excited to be able to use what I learned in this course in the future. I have already been able to apply it in jobs I have now. While home during breaks I taught at a dance studio in New Jersey. I was able to use the lesson planning skills we learned and apply them to my own classes. It helped the classes run efficiently. Methods of teaching dance can be applied to all types of careers and majors, I will definitely take what I learned and apply the skills in my future.

How to create environments that allow people to thrive

 Ellen Nickodemus

I thoroughly enjoyed taking DAN385 this semester as it allowed me to reflect on my own educational experiences in life, while also teaching me valuable lessons and standards in the field of education. In the past, I have been a camp counselor for children at a sleep-away summer camp, and in the future I definitely want to reintroduce working with children back into my life. This class demonstrated the importance of being accepting, non-judgemental, and understanding of everyone, no matter their walk of life, limitations, or struggles. We learned how vulnerable our brains are during childhood, and how a child’s adolescence is a crucial time to allow for full, free exploration and expression to form into their true self. Just because a child has a parent or guardian doesn’t mean that their home life is stable and nurturing for positive development. I learned that it is up to teachers to fulfill their duties of creating a space where their students can be comfortable, thrive, and ultimately reach their full potential.

I wasn’t fully sure what to expect going into this course, but as the class progressed I felt myself gain a new understanding and perspective on the teaching profession that I didn’t have before. In the beginning of the semester we learned about the rich history of ancient education and how various civilizations and cultures had unique ways of teaching and passing on knowledge. As the course continued, we focused on more modern methods of teaching but I noticed how the ancient education we learned about had significant connections to the current methods. This course was always positive within my day, and it never felt like a waste of time and I could create real life applications of everything we learned.

Later in the semester, I grew more confident in my teaching skills and knowledge and felt more assured in my ability to control a class or group of children. When I got the date mixed up for my final teaching presentation, I was nervous but ended up being very proud of myself and my ability to adapt. Overall, this course taught me valuable lessons on the importance of teachers and the power they have when they can truly connect with and change students' lives. Working with children is something I’ve always loved, and this class gave me more confidence and optimism on my future goals to positively impact the youth.

Currently I am a business major with my major being legal studies. If I am being honest though, I have absolutely no plan for my future and struggle to see myself working in one specific job over another. Despite this uncertainty, this class felt crucial within my college career as it taught real life applicable concepts. Something I am passionate about is working with people and creating genuine relationships that have the ability to make a difference in their lives. One of the biggest takeaways from this course is the idea of helping people (students) achieve their long-term goals or simply setting them up for their future. When we talked about mission vs. vision statements and coaching vs. mentoring vs. teaching, I knew that later in life I want to apply these ideas and help people reach their goals that align with their values and aspirations (mentoring). I want to be a figure in people’s lives that they can rely on to ask questions and look for advice for things they are struggling with. This course taught me how to be a proper mentor, and how to create environments that allow people to thrive and learn to their own individual ability. If I can use what this course has taught me in my future, then I will be proud and happy that I can truly make a difference in people’s lives.

Eager to execute these lessons in my space and career

 Maya Zahavi

My takeaways from this class have revolved around the craft of teaching, particularly in designing lesson plans and tailoring courses for different demographics. Examining the elaborateness of curriculum development, I've learned to effectively structure classes regarding aspects such as age groups and people with disabilities. Learning how to create exciting activities, sequence movements, balance between technical elements, and develop creativity has been influential. These lessons extend outside the dance studio, impacting how I approach challenges and communicate in different parts of my life.

Despite my non-professional dance background, my participation in this dance class has proven to be an enriching experience. Delving into the complexities of dance instruction opened up an entirely new world for me, focused on leading a class. The knowledge I gained ranged far beyond dance moves; it incorporated the detailed elements needed to develop a thorough lesson plan fit for dance and any instructional setting.

Exploring teaching methods tailored to accommodate individuals with specific disabilities added a layer of depth to my understanding, emphasizing the significance of inclusivity in education. A standout aspect of this class was the opportunity to witness and actively participate in the creation and execution of lesson plans by every person in the class. Observing each person's diverse approaches in planning activities and communicating their unique teaching styles gave me more knowledge in experiential learning. Forming my lesson plan and then having the chance to lead the class gave me a valuable hands-on experience, making the entire semester both enlightening and immensely enjoyable.

This class has widened my perspective on education and provided various skills beyond dance. I thoroughly enjoyed the class, appreciating the professor's direction, the company of my fellow students, and the inclusive environment that provided a safe space for learning and sharing individual lessons.

The insights I acquired from this class will shape my future endeavors in creative advertising and graphic design. Learning all the elements of lesson planning and teaching strategies has given me a unique perspective on communication and engagement. This newfound understanding will be necessary as I craft captivating visual narratives and designs that resonate effectively with different audiences.

Additionally, the focus on inclusivity and adapting teaching methods for various situations will assist in my approach to creating inclusive and attainable advertising campaigns. The hands-on experience of creating and executing lesson plans has sharpened my organizational and creative skills, which are directly transferable to the evolving field of creative advertising. Overall, the knowledge and skills acquired in this class will be a helpful foundation, directing me to create impactful and inclusive visual communication in my future career.

My journey in this class has been incredibly rewarding, providing many takeaways. My personal experience was exceptional as we explored the intricacies of teaching, lesson planning, and forming an inclusive environment. The useful knowledge and skills attained throughout the course will undoubtedly find an influential application in my future creative advertising and graphic design ambitions. Gaining a new understanding of communication, engagement, and inclusivity, I am eager to execute these lessons in my space and career. Reflecting on thistransformative experience, I look forward to applying these insights to contribute significantly tomy professional journey's dynamic and transforming landscape of creative expression.

Capturing the students' interest is our responsibility as educators

  Nicole Peterson

Reflecting on this course, I can truly say that it’s been very rewarding. It not only taught me about the history of teaching dance but also gave me some important lessons on how to teach in general. One big thing I've learned is the need to create a safe and welcoming space in our classrooms so that students feel comfortable being themselves. I also learned that if students aren't enjoying the class or understanding the material, it's not their fault. It's up to us, as teachers, to make the content interesting and to light a spark in them so they can genuinely love what they're learning. The course showed me that making the subject exciting and capturing the students' interest is our responsibility as educators.

Throughout this course, I experienced a genuine sense of belonging and acceptance in the classroom. It ignited my interest to the point where I started envisioning a potential future in teaching. Additionally, the course evoked a strong sense of nostalgia, taking me back to my childhood days of dancing. During the days when people taught their lessons, I really felt free and felt like I could express myself. This course served as a therapeutic release from daily worries, offering a precious space for self-reflection and indulging in activities I genuinely enjoy. Overall, it provided a welcomed escape and allowed me to reconnect with the joy of self-expression through dance.

This course imparted valuable lessons on self-expression, fostering safe environments, establishing a vision and mission, and effective planning – all of which are directly applicable to my field of business studies. In the fast-paced realm of business, where the focus is often solely on financial gains, I aim to introduce a shift towards prioritizing people. When I embark on a career in business, my goal is to ensure that individuals within the organization feel acknowledged and valued. Drawing from the course, I plan to create safe spaces for open communication, allowing team members to confidently express themselves. I'll also make it a priority to communicate and instill a clear mission and vision, providing a guiding purpose for our work. Furthermore, the cultural awareness gained in this class equips me to navigate interactions with diverse cultures, enhancing my ability to foster inclusivity and collaboration within the business environment.

Everyone came up with curriculum wise to teach their own class

Kayla Humphrey

When coming into this class I didn't know what to expect, I chose this class based on interest to complete my minor. But as I learned and grew with the class I found that it consists of a wonderful learning environment where the professor works to make everyone feel understood and included. I learned about different learning methods and how to take the steps to creating a curriculum while including my preferred teaching methods. The history of dance education really helps you understand how dance education came to this day regardless of the type, or level.

I felt like I could be free in the space I was in this class. Many times it's so easy to be reserved and feel like you don't want to be out there or engage in class, but this is a class where I found I'm not afraid to engage. I'm grateful to have classmates who were all accepting and grateful to have a professor that fostered those behaviors. Overall I will say I felt the best in class when getting to see what everyone came up with curriculum wise to teach their own class. And inspired when I see how some other adults take initiative to create a curriculum to teach small children and children with special needs.

In the future I hope to incorporate what I learned about curriculum and schedule into any future lesson plans I would have as a teacher. I am not completely sure yet what I want to do in the future but I do know I got some beneficial skills in planning in this class. Getting the chance to also go in front of the class and teach was scary at first but definitely  a life changing experience. The tough part is doing it for the first time, and as long as you have a good plan and curriculum as the professor said you can keep your students' attention. I am so grateful for this class. And I look forward to learning more in the future with this professor!

I wanted to do good in the class for myself.

 Yadi Nevarez

Over the course of the semester, there are so many takeaways this class has given me. I believe one of the most significant points of the semester that I can remember is when we created our Curriculum Design. Being that I am an Elementary Education major, I feel like I have been faced with things like curriculum and lesson planning more often than other students because it is a big part of my major. However, I find it amazing how in each one of my courses where we cover this topic each person teaches and does it a little differently, which always teaches me something new. I really loved the video we watched and I think that it took so many different parts of curriculum planning and broke them up so much further that it made me assess my audiences on a deeper level (ex: the empathy map).

Diving into our action plans and picking how we are going to incorporate goals into our procedure, has led me to think about the smaller overlooked moments where teaching and learning are still happening. I also learned so much about my teaching philosophy. In my other courses, we have talked about teaching philosophies and explored creating our own, but in this course, I absolutely loved that we looked at real examples and broke them apart. This made me think about the philosophies differently and I can’t believe no other one of my courses has done this! Beyond that I love the students teaching presentations at the end of the year, they have not only given me takeaways with activity ideas but it made me learn through experience. I was a “student” for most of the lesson as I sat there and experienced the teaching I thought about what things I needed as a student, which shaped my lesson creation!

In the course, I always felt welcomed, accepted, and ready to learn. I think that something very unique to this course is that since it is about teaching dance, we had this class in one of the dance rooms rather than a conventional classroom. I think that this was extremely important in affecting how I felt going to class each day. I felt motivated and like I was already directly connected to dance just from being in the appropriate space. Beyond that, I found how the learning happens in this course to be extremely comforting as a student. I think one of the biggest things that drives stress and detachment from a course is when you feel like it is mandatory, and you feel like you can’t make mistakes, are behind, confused, etc. However in this course, I never once felt like that. I have had courses in the past where I dread going to but feel like I have to, and once I get into that class that dread acts as a wall preventing me from fully learning. In this course, it never once crossed my mind that I don’t want to go or need to. I always was excited to go to class and do something different each day. I loved connecting with the space and felt not only that I had a professor who cared about me but I also felt like I wanted to do good in the class for myself. In this course, I always felt like I was gaining something from being there!

I think there are so many ways I am going to apply this course to my own field of study later on that I can not possibly name them all. Being that I am an Elementary Education major who does plan on hopefully becoming a general education elementary teacher in the future, although I won’t necessarily be teaching dance directly, I will 100% be incorporating many of the concepts I learned in this course. I think one of the things that is permanently engraved in my mind, is on the first day of class when you made each of us learn our classmates' names. I remember you explaining that you do this because how can you expect us to learn with one another and grow together without taking the time to know something about each other? This has stuck with me so much, prior to you saying this I always thought it was important that the teacher know their students' names because it is important for that student-teacher connection however I never took the time to think about how it is just as important that each student knows each others names as well. I will definitely be applying this to each one of my classes without fail going forward.

In my future field as a teacher, I want my students to feel that same sense of connection with one another. In addition to this, I think I will apply so many little things I picked up on about teaching lessons, such as what to do to quickly improvise on time and little activity ideas to do to boost morale or get student activity up. I also plan to apply what we learned about assessing teaching philosophies in my job search whenever I am applying to different schools, to ensure that my perspective and values are going to be upheld at my future job!

Overall I am so extremely grateful that it was such an amazing semester. I feel like I learned so many valuable ideas and perspectives about educating! It is courses like this that affirm my decision to become a teacher in the future, thank you for such a great semester, Jorge!

Creating a safe space for the child is essential

Melissa Callard

I found many takeaways from this class and thought everything we learned was very applicable to real life situations. Firstly, when working with kids it is crucial to know all kids retain information differently. For this reason it is helpful to be flexible and willing to adjust you way of teaching to be tailored to the child. I also appreciated learning different ways to keep children engage throughout a class. This includes creating a welcoming, non-judgemental environment, using visuals and having the kids participate.

I thought this course was very applicable in the work I do at my job at a studio. I enjoyed all the activities we did in class and always looked forward to the interesting topics we discussed. Jorge was very welcoming to everyone and created a safe and interactive space for people to participate. I always found this class refreshing and my opportunity to just enjoy what I was learning. Overall, I appreciated the structure of the class and was fond of the activities and lessons that we did.

The methodologies learned throughout this class are highly related to my field of psychology as well as my part time working as a teacher and coach at a local studio. It is evident that children are not the easiest to work with, but this class has opened my eyes to new ways of approaching in class situations. In psychology, it is practical to work with children who struggle with a variety of mental health issues and the techniques used in class to allow a child to be comfortable in a classroom setting can be used in one to one sessions such as therapy. Creating a safe space for the child is essential to getting them to open up and engage in the activities of class and therapy.

Creation of a bodily language that transcends conventional textbooks.

Serene Thompkins

The course I've completed has left me with a significant lesson in flexibility, a principle integral to the core of teaching that has persisted throughout time. Exploring the foundations of education and its diverse objectives, whether for survival, community enhancement, personal development, or social progression, proved enlightening. Rarely do we question the purpose behind learning and receiving information. Present-day education often necessitates rote memorization with minimal practical application in our daily lives. Our systems tend to be rigid, alienating those unfamiliar with the predominant instructional style. For me, the key takeaway is the creation of a curriculum without engraving it in stone. The reality of absenteeism, tardiness, challenging family situations, and myriad other factors necessitates adaptability. Teaching dance underscored the importance of compassion and understanding as fundamental elements in effective communication. Dance, as a mode of expression, mirrored the complexities and rewards inherent in teaching. Working with diverse minds and bodies, I realized the creation of a bodily language that transcends conventional textbooks.

This course provided solace and stability, acting as a refuge during personal stress. Stepping into class dissipated internal chaos, allowing me to focus on the material rather than spiraling thoughts. Being amidst passionate and dedicated peers was heartwarming, witnessing their teaching styles and learning about diverse cultures and dance forms. Exploring the history of education laid a solid foundation, illustrating its evolution and adaptation to societal changes. Dance served as a tool for debunking personal beliefs and biases. My aversion to ballet transformed into a deep appreciation, finding it mentally stimulating and enriching. Transitioning knowledge from dance to teaching English and literature unveils fascinating parallels. Both are forms of expression rooted in distinct domains: one in physical movement, the other in psychological and linguistic realms. Despite their differences, they share the objective of fostering personal growth, satisfaction, and social connections.

Teaching foundational English and literature concepts mirrors instructing basic dance principles. Just as dance necessitates understanding movements and rhythm, language arts requires grasping grammar, vocabulary, and comprehension. Both disciplines are crucial for holistic development, enabling communication, self-expression, and social interaction. Crafting a lesson plan parallels a choreographer's meticulous planning, guiding students through learning processes. However, flexibility is vital due to the unpredictability inherent in both the dance studio and the classroom. Adaptability allows for immediate adjustments catering to students' needs and evolving learning environments. Compassion and understanding form the bedrock for both dance instructors and educators. Instructors empathize with students in dance, nurturing confidence and celebrating progress, similar to educators fostering individual learning styles and a safe space for expression. Teaching English to children demands collaboration for their satisfaction and growth, akin to refining dance movements collaboratively. Both disciplines aim to empower individuals, fostering self-expression, self-discovery, and connections with the world. Recognizing these parallels enables a holistic approach to education, nurturing not just knowledge but also creativity, confidence, and deeper self-understanding and empathy for others.

In essence, this course was the ideal catalyst for my future endeavors within the realm of education. I am eternally grateful for everyone’s compassion and acceptance. Thank you kindly for such an amazing opportunity to act as both a pupil and a professional. It was a great time!

Branching out more, and trying new things

Anna Sutton

I really enjoyed this course! I was pleasantly surprised at how much I have learned, and originally I thought I knew a lot about this topic. One of the main takeaways was when working with little kids, it is very important to start slow and gradually increase the difficulty of what you are teaching. Also, the importance of using props and incorporating different learning types is a great way to keep attention and engagement. I really enjoyed the final projects. Actually applying what we learned and getting real world experience was really effective! Lastly, the importance of a lesson plan was something that stood out to me. I didn't realize how much you truly have to plan out in order to have a successful class. Also, preparing for the unexpected was something I took away from this course!

I felt great throughout this course. I really appreciate the professor's teaching style. I think doing the discussion posts helped to stay involved in the lessons and I learned a lot. We also watched many videos, which was very effective. Hearing different perspectives as well through a guest teacher was super interesting. I loved learning about the process of teaching and educating and look forward to doing more of it!

I have previous experience with teaching ballet to little kids, and found it very hard to keep their attention. I think I can apply a lot of what I learned in this course to possible jobs in the future. Like I had mentioned above, starting very simple is important. This encourages those who are nervous to participate to not be intimidated, and will want to try something new. The final projects allowed me to try a lot of different styles. I will definitely start branching out more, and trying new things.

Thank you for a great semester! I thoroughly enjoyed the course, and really appreciate how understanding you are with your students.  I hope our paths cross again!

Role in emotion processing, expression, and creativity

Chloe Soriano

One of the main takeaways I obtained from this class was curriculum structure and how significant it is to human learning, no matter the demographics of the students. It is highly important to have structure and to understand different kinds of learning methods for your audience since everyone has their own style of learning. I did not really understand what the curriculum was, what it meant, and how it has changed over the years in different regions of the world. It was very interesting to see that the ancient curriculum was rooted in core values, morals, and beliefs (including religion) of certain groups of people, and how that infiltrated their learning. I also thought it was intriguing how the American curriculum removed the performing arts and then revived it due to its role in emotion processing, expression, and creativity. The section of the class where I learned the most was the difference between coaching, mentoring, and teaching. I was a bit shocked to learn that trust has a significant role in learning and the teacher-student relationship, and depending on the cultural aspects (e.g., individualistic versus collectivistic attitudes), how it can have a positive or negative impact on learning. When given the opportunity to teach, I would lean more towards coaching because I think trust is an important aspect.

The class was very well structured and written out clearly; I liked how it was through discussion posts because we got to see the thoughts and takeaways from other students in the class. Each discussion post was accompanied by a website link, which was very helpful in following the class compared to other lectures that might use lecture slides or verbal teaching. It was also super helpful if we missed a class to look at the website to see what was discussed so that we could be caught up and make up for the lecture. The aspect of the class that I enjoyed the most were the kinesthetic activities to teach the concept; I am more of a tactile learner, so I like getting up and moving around. It always felt like a safe environment too, which is something that I noticed from the first day of class. For example, learning each other’s names and a fun fact made a difference compared to my other classes, where we just sit in a lecture and listen to the professor for 75 minutes. It felt more interactive, which I appreciate very much as well as the “goodbye” at the end of the class. Those two minutes allowed me to remember gratitude, that I am in a safe space with amazing people, and despite the stress that might be coming from other classes, I am lucky enough to attend university in the first place.

My field of study is biomedical engineering, which is very clear-cut, black and white. I think that one of the ways I could apply it to this field is finding how everyone else learns. Engineering requires teamwork and collaboration, and the hardest part is working with people who you might not know well. I think seeing everyone’s learning methods filters itself in how they problem solve and work with others, so knowing the different types of learning methods would be very beneficial for this case. Another is using the mission and vision statement concept, perhaps when it comes to creating a Proof of Concept document or filing for a patent for a product. Mission and vision statements are important in that it explicitly states the intentions of a school or organization for their purposes of teaching the desired concept. In engineering, there are three departments where this could be applicable: Research and Development, Quality, and Regulatory Affairs. All three of them interact with each other in that the goal is to get the product to market while keeping patient safety in mind and talking to the FDA. With knowing how mission and vision statements are made, it would be appropriate to make similar statements when submitting files of engineering designs.

Thank you so much for this class, it was a breath of fresh air with my other classes :)

A unique perspective on leadership, creativity, and communication, qualities t

Katy Hylton

Methods of Teaching Dance has left me with many takeaways that extend beyond the world of dance education. Diving into the history of education and the types of curriculum gave me a lot of insight into teaching that I had not previously known. Additionally, learning and applying different teaching methods provided a foundation for understanding how to act differently to accommodate different ages and learning styles. Learning about prominent educators, especially those working with students with disabilities, and their innovative approaches showcased the importance of adaptability and creativity with lesson planning and teaching methods. The historical context, coupled with the hands-on experience of creating dance lesson plans, has equipped me with a holistic perspective on teaching and makes me more qualified to teach not only dance, but concepts that extend past the arts in general. The key takeaway I have from this class is the recognition that effective teaching is a practice that evolves with time, requiring a continuous commitment to learning and adapting one's approach to suit the needs of diverse learners.

Engaging in a hands-on learning environment, where I not only experienced the receiving end of dance curriculum but also actively crafted and delivered dance lessons, was an incredibly interesting experience. The application of different teaching methods allowed me to see firsthand the impact of various approaches on the learning process. The collaborative nature of the class fostered a sense of community and shared growth, as each student took turns leading lessons and providing constructive feedback. This dynamic environment not only enhanced my knowledge of different dance genres and movement styles but also created a sense of confidence in my ability to effectively communicate and connect with others through the medium of dance. The hands-on nature of the class made the learning process fun and engaging, reinforcing the idea that true understanding is achieved through experience.

As I transition into my studies as a management and marketing major, the knowledge and skills acquired from methods of teaching dance will transfer to my academic and professional journey. The ability to design and execute lesson plans has further developed my organizational and strategic thinking skills, which are directly applicable to the business world. Additionally, the experience of teaching dance has enhanced my interpersonal communication, a crucial aspect in the worlds of management and marketing. The blend of history education information and practical teaching experience has provided me with a unique perspective on leadership, creativity, and communication, qualities that will undoubtedly set me apart in my pursuit of success in management and marketing.

 Trishika Gupta

During my time in Professor Jorge’s “Methods of teaching dance” class, I have learned the role of curriculum in a world wide forum. I learned the history and importance of a good curriculum. I understand now how important a curriculum can be on an entire generation of future scientists, architects, engineers, doctors, educators, singers, dancers, and many more. With the right nurture from educational platforms, children can thrive and truly become their best selves. I enjoyed learning about visual learning aids, I do believe that more visual learning and kinesthetic learning could have helped me amplify my skills. I do feel like that's something I lacked in my own education. I want to make sure that my future children are educated in a holistic manner because that is what I would have wanted when I was growing up. I believe that the Arts are important in making an individual be themselves and express their emotions, which is not very common in learning platforms even today. A holistic approach allows for children to be in touch with their emotional needs as well as their educational needs.

I really enjoyed making my own unit plan and being able to teach my peers. I think that helped me gain experience and leadership skills. I was very passionate about my topic and reasoning for teaching the class. When I go back home, I plan to give this lesson plan to an occupational therapist I used to intern with. I believe it will be beneficial to her and to many children that lack control of their gross motors skills, social skills, and communication skills. I also enjoyed Dicki’s workshop because that was my original inspiration for my lesson plan. I loved their passion and artistic liberty.

I would love to apply the skills I learned in the future, I’m still unsure of my career path but if I ever do get into the education field, I will apply everything I've learned from this class! Even if I don’t go into the education field, I feel like I’ve learned so much about people and children as a whole. I think that is beneficial to learn about in any field as it is always important to understand the people you are working with or about people/children that you can help. Also, after Dicki’s lesson I realized that there may be a path for me in child psychology. I believe I could help children improve their learning abilities and cope with everyday burdens such as complications with ADHD or Autism. I thoroughly enjoyed this class, I loved the environment and I really appreciate how this class has impacted my career choices and has given me clarity on more options for me. I am really happy I took this class with Jorge, he is the best! Thank you for being the greatest inspiration to be a part of the educational field.

Thank you!

The crucialness of organization and structure

 Gabriella Marinich

One key takeaway that I have from the class is the importance of thoroughly sitting down and planning your lesson, rather than just preparing it on a whim. I understand how crucial it is to create a lesson plan so that the class goes smoothly, although there may always be surprise bumps along the way. Next, I see the importance of having both a mission statement and a vision statement for the classroom. Having an overarching statement that leads one’s teachings and lessons allows for all of the aspects of the class to be cohesive. Furthermore, I see the importance of having set classroom rules. I also understand that the teacher must communicate the classroom rules to his/her students to have the best teaching experience. Telling students that being respectful, for example, is a classroom rule can help keep students in line with classroom expectations. Lastly, I see the importance of creating a classroom schedule that students can follow. This not only teaches students about time management, but also helps the teacher stay on time and help his/her organization of each day.

I really enjoyed learning during class. I valued how there was a lot of participation from us students, and that we were not just sitting and listening to a lecture. I also like how we worked in groups a lot with each other. Not only did it help foster an open learning environment, but it also helped us get to know each other and spend time talking to each other. I would have to say my favorite part of the class was getting to be taught by each other for our final projects. I loved getting to see each student’s creativity and ideas regarding their lessons. I was also exposed to certain styles of dance that I would have not seen or done if it were not for the lessons. I think that everybody has been doing such a great job so far, and I am excited to see the last few presentations. I also really enjoyed creating my own lesson plan for a class. I had taught dance classes before to young children, but it was in a less structured classroom environment, as it was for a summer camp. I did not actually have to create my own lesson plan and structure the class in a set way. However, with the assignment I got to actually create a lesson plan as if I was a real teacher. I think this provided great practice for me if I was to ever become a real dance teacher.

I will definitely apply this knowledge in my own field. I am a marketing major, and being creative is a large part of that profession. I had to have a lot of creativity when coming up with the lesson plan and my class, and that is a very important skill set to have for marketing. Next, if I was to become a dance teacher as a side job, as dance is my minor, I now really understand how to teach a proper class. Not only is having a set structure very important, but also making sure to keep students engaged and entertained is a must. I think I have learned many essential skills and information on how to be a great dance teacher. I understand the importance of mental health and having and teaching mindfulness to students, for example. Lastly, a large takeaway I have from the class that I will definitely use in my own field in the future is the crucialness of organization and structure. Having organization skills in any aspect of life will prove to be beneficial.

Thank you for a great semester! I really enjoyed the class and will take what I learned with me even when the class is over!

 Experiencing how others teach

 Megan O'Brien

At the beginning of this course, I thought that I had a pretty good understanding of how to facilitate a class and its curriculum. As we discussed each of the modules, I found that there was a lot more valuable information and details that go into teaching that I wasn’t originally familiar with. Some topics and strategies I had never even thought about when leading a class and teaching. I liked how we began by reviewing the history of curriculum and dance. I think that it opened up the idea of how much it has really changed over the years and how learning and teaching are continuing to change and grow.

In this class, I always found that I would have fun with my classmates and overall had an enjoyable experience. Classes can sometimes be stressful and expect a lot of time and energy, but when I went to this class I wasn’t fully focused on the assignments, but I enjoyed the class and stayed engaged. I think that it is hard to make sure students are engaged all the time, but as we learned in class, movement while learning really does help when retaining information. This also helps with focus. I feel a difference in my attention when comparing this class to one I am only sitting down in. I loved teaching at the end and getting to share my curriculum. I also enjoyed being able to see what others had planned for the class!

I think that every time you teach, you find new ways to improve. I had never taught a college-level dance class, and I think that it was helpful to lead a different age group to understand different groups require different difficulties and curricula. I personally want to teach dance after college as well as be some kind of leader. I think that learning how to create a lesson plan and curriculum, how to keep students engaged, and the different ways of teaching will be very beneficial as I begin to teach more. I think the most helpful thing is experiencing how others teach, and being able to apply what you think works best to your own work. I now have a better understanding of methods of teaching dance!

 Cooperation and leadership abilities

 Emilia Ramirez

Thanks to this dancing class, I now comprehend movement, emotion, and the body's complex language. Understanding the variety of dance genres and their cultural relevance is essential. Ballet, modern, and ethnic dances have their history and appeal. My kinesthetic awareness has improved my capacity to express emotions and thoughts via movement. The focus on cooperation and group choreography(during the dance lessons) has enhanced my teamwork and built class community. This training gave me a lifetime of respect for dance and its power to tell stories.

I found this dancing-teaching course to be a thrilling and uplifting experience. I was nervous since I had little dance-teaching experience. The teacher and students' friendly and welcoming atmosphere instantly calmed any apprehension. As the weeks went on, I gained confidence in my body's movement and expression. Dancing brought excitement and freedom, making the class a place to celebrate self-expression. Each takeaway from the class felt like a victory, and the studio's positivity made each class more than simply fitness.

The principles acquired in this dancing-teaching class have remarkable relevance and usefulness for my study area. Academic achievement and dance routine mastery need discipline and perseverance. By teaching body language and spatial awareness, dance also improves my scholarly communication and presentation skills. Collaboration in choreography has strengthened my cooperation and leadership abilities, which are helpful in group assignments and research. Dance class encourages me to think creatively and comprehend nonverbal communication in academic and personal settings, which I can use to further my master's educational journey in psychology.

Better equipped to navigate this challenge

Soffia Caliva

In the course, I gleaned valuable insights that underscore the significance of meticulous

lesson planning and preparation. The overarching lesson was clear: a well-constructed lesson is

pivotal, yet flexibility is equally crucial. Having a plan is a fundamental aspect of effective

teaching, but it is equally essential to recognize that students have diverse needs and skills.

Hence, the ability to adapt and modify the plan to cater to individual differences emerges as a

cornerstone of successful teaching. This resonates with the belief that education should be

inclusive, accommodating the unique requirements of each student. Through this course, I have

come to appreciate the delicate balance between structure and adaptability in the teaching

process.

My experience in this course was not merely academic; it was characterized by a sense of

comfort and security fostered by the professor and the learning environment. The professor

created a safe space conducive to enjoyable learning. This environment not only enhanced my

understanding of the subject matter but also made the learning process more enriching. Feeling

secure in the learning environment is vital, as it encourages active participation and a willingness

to explore new ideas. It reinforces the notion that learning is not just about acquiring knowledge

but also about the experience and the environment in which it takes place.

As I reflect on how to apply the lessons learned in this course to my own field of studies,

I am particularly drawn to the challenge of teaching health care concepts effectively. Teaching, in

general, is a demanding skill, and imparting knowledge about the importance of healthcare from

an early age adds another layer of complexity. However, armed with the techniques and

instruments acquired in this course, I feel better equipped to navigate this challenge. The

adaptability ingrained in the teaching approach learned here will be invaluable in tailoring

lessons to diverse audiences, ensuring that the significance of healthcare is communicated

effectively. I am excited about the prospect of contributing to the well-being of future

generations through education, and this course has provided me with the tools to do so with

efficacy and innovation.
