in the teaching of dance and movement.

QUESTIONS 1 & 2
1. What is the main difference between teaching, coaching and mentoring?
2. Why is important to know the difference between these terms?
IV
A Note to Remember
Ideally, an educator should be able to be a teacher who also mentors and coaches his/her students. The kinesthetic loop allows the dance teacher to know exactly how the expressive process works.

Students' Work
Our group could firmly see the difference between teaching, coaching, and mentoring.
Teaching to all of us seemed like the softest option and the one that requires the most patience on the teachers end. You should provide a safe space for the student and allow them to learn without fear of failure, an environment that constantly pushes the child to learn through their mistakes.
Coaching seemed like an applied learning method. Coaching requires hands on experiences and needs to be done mid action as opposed to prior or past.
(2) Why is important to know the difference between these terms?
A mentor seems to be a more trustworthy friendly figure who specializes in what you are looking to learn and guides you through the real life application of the skills you're trying to build.
Group Reflection: How do we choose a mentor and why?
In terms of choosing a mentor we all understand that it's a process that
is highly personal. Choosing a mentor means choosing someone who not
only inspires you but someone who can push you to be better. It
shouldn't be constant praise, or someone who makes the work feel easy.
It should be someone who pushes you and someone who is able to give you
constructive criticism without it breaking down your self worth.
You can choose a mentor by finding someone who has a similar career path, someone you look up to, someone who has similar morals, values and philosophies as you. This can be someone with the same career and future goals as you as well as someone you can meet organically that maybe you have met within a space you already occupy. It is also beneficial to find someone who inspires you and gives you a goal to work towards.
Coaching: focused on real world application and implementing personal experience to help guide others
Mentoring: focused on the individuals personal path and aligning them with the correct steps while creating a stronger relationship
(2) Why is important to know the difference between these terms?
(1) What is the main difference between teaching, coaching and mentoring?
- Teaching allows someone to learn specific concepts and key information that will allow them to perform a process. Teaching is more surface level as it gives someone JUST ENOUGH information to do a process. Teaching DOES NOT give someone the tools to adapt to a changing situation. It is brief and solely focuses on one specific process.
- On the other hand, coaching dives deeper and coaching helps someone adapt to various situations in the real world. For example, if something unplanned happens, a coach can step in and help the person adapt to the ever-changing situation.
- Lastly, mentoring is the deepest level as it helps an individual reach their goals and focuses on much bigger and broader situations that carry someone through their life or career. Mentors create paths for people and don't focus on any specific processes, they focus on the individual and their values.
(2) Why is important to know the difference between these terms?
- It's important to know the difference between these terms because each of them will carry a student differently through life. If you are a teacher, you must decide how deep you want to dive and how much you value really changing the student's lives. Yes you can be a successful teacher by ONLY teaching, but knowing about coaching and mentoring can inspire teachers to change their methods and go beyond the surface.
Group Reflection: How do we choose a mentor and why?
- Make sure their career aligns with what you wanna do
- Maybe they are in your inner circle... a mentor could be a family member!
- Find someone with similar beliefs and values
- Find someone who will push you out of your comfort zone
- Find someone who also wants to help you... make sure the relationship is mutual!
- Find someone who you can be comfortable around and be yourself... someone you can talk to about your feelings, aspirations, values, and maybe even turmoil
- Find someone who doesn't want to control you!
